The Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center (TPC) is holding a series of online conversations on tax and fiscal policy in today’s economy. The discussions take place every other Thursday afternoon and feature varying perspectives on the historic economic challenges facing the United States and the world and the best ways to address them.
This week’s guest is Kathleen Quinn, a partner at McDermott Will & Emery specializing in state and local tax matters. She’ll discuss the tax implications of the rapid growth in remote work accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. A key policy question is whether workers owe individual income taxes to their state of residence or where their business is located. Although the US Supreme Court recently refused to weigh in, new federal guidelines may be necessary to help businesses and taxpayers navigate an evolving and complex landscape.
